Project Description
We are proud to announce that this year, the Rotary Run for Rwanda is reaching its fifth birthday! In 2011 we took over the well known Run for the Ferry on Bowen Island, as previous organisers were unwilling to take on the work for another year. This year our run takes place on Saturday August 29th.
We have a 10K run, a 5K run/walk and a 1.K run for children. Year by year we are building our list of runners, and we hope to have a record turnout this year. The run takes place in the morning of Bowfest Day. Bowfest is a Bowen Island festival that traditionally takes place on the Saturday preceding the Labour Day long weekend. Our run starts at 8:30 am for children and 9:00 am for all others, so that all is done before the Bowfest parade. We pride ourselves on having the best viewing spot for the parade, and often left-over treats from the run are available for the public!
All the runs start on the municipal dock adjacent to the ferry terminal and end at the public library lawn just up the road. This is principally a trail run with a very short section on a quiet road. We have a number of sponsors who provide financial support, prizes, treats and water. Sponsors’ logos are published on the website rotaryrunforrwanda.com, are also represented on the run poster and are to be seen on the sponsors board on the day of the run.
All proceeds from the run go to Komera Canada, a Canadian registered charity, that supports girls in rural Rwanda. Please check out the website www.komeracanada.ca for information on this worthy charity.
