The new windmill to provide irrigation for the community garden at Hluvukani, South Africa

For several years, beginning in 2011 the Rotary Club of Bowen Island partnered with the Rotary Club of Burnaby to raise funds for a project to supply year-round water to the Kunavelela Community Garden in Hluvukani, South Africa.

This garden has become a valuable food source for the elderly, the sick, and the orphaned youths of Hluvukani.

The problem was that for most of the growing season, the area is very dry. The townsfolk had managed to have a bore hole dug and the project was stalled. With Rotary’s participation a windmill was purchased and installed, along with elevated water tanks and irrigation pipes.
